From Pilot to Ownership: Empowering Students with the One Person One Tree Program in SMKN 3 Denpasar

Precious Island partnered with SMKN 3 Denpasar to develop and implement the ‘One Person One Tree’ (OnePot) program, empowering students to actively engage in sustainable practices and grow a greener environment within the school and beyond. This case study summarizes the two phase programs between 2020 to 2022.

The Challenge

Fostering Environment Responsibility in a Disconnected World

Students needed tools and motivation to engage in environmental action, a challenge made more difficult due to learning limitations because of online learning restrictions. Traditional education settings had become ineffective during the height of the COVID 19 pandemic, necessitating new avenues for positive impact.

Our Solution

A Multi-Staged Learning Program for Systemic School Change

Precious Island developed a unique two-stage approach: In 2020 a pilot program challenged students to participate in online trainings that encourages practical implementation in the creation and maintaining a sustainable eco system by planting and maintaining trees. From there a 2021-2022 expansion of this approach added greater implementation through building school policy, student engagement, skill building and independent initiative amongst participating schools, teachers and student to create a truly sustainable action-based plan at the schools

Key Results and Impact

  • Increased Awareness and Knowledge: Provided training in tree cultivation, waste reduction, making eco enzymes, soil fertility, compost creation and more.
  • Engaged and empowered students: More than 200 students enrolled for the program during its 2 stage, created and cultivated long term impact for years. Active students (150) and leader group.
    • New Environmental Practices: Facilitated over a hundred plus plant growths with students at their own homes, provided workshops in producing tangible products.
    • Community Leadership: Empowered student-led task-force with key members (35 from original group of 200) to organize sustainable school initiatives by providing capacity, mentorship as well as relevant access to knowledge and resource in project management to establish autonomy.

One Person One Tree not only produced tangible results of increased trees and a more sustainable production capacity, but it built real world skills and leadership skills for every participants for a sustainable long-term growth of positive local environment. By encouraging practical engagement with key topics, One Pot encouraged an actual application of key theoretical knowledge.

Next Phase

Moving into the future, the program will implement newly discovered insights to engage all stake-holders in all parts of school activities, including building a structure for waste management, compost programs, and empowering communities to continue these efforts independently and continue to spread the knowledge further into future generations.
